i never knew i was so happy until i saw yr beautiful face

gabriel daniel-thomas stone attended the first grade today.

he had his suspicions about this whole "homework" thing he's been hearing about.

so, hows about a quick game of b-ball to loosen up before class? sure.

it's hard when everybody wants to take yr picture.

success!! so to celebrate we crashed the oakwoods swimming pool to have a father/son First Day of First Grade Afterparty.

gabe showed off his new underwater swimming skills: underwater somersaults, handstands, frog AND doggie paddles.

and one heck of a mean cannonball too. very impressive!

the sun went down and we had a rumble in our tummies.

gabe's got a fan club of hot chix to laugh at all his jokes. fan club president michelle larkin wouldn't miss this dinner for the world.

and don't forget his girl-on-the-side, pretty lil' malysa wilson. watch out larkin, you got competition.

i am so proud that you are my son gabriel...
i love you buddy.
thank you god.

from the coroner of my heart

you ever feel like someone is trying to hurt you on purpose?

spent the day with my new friend sarah. sarah is a friend of a friend who just moved here from seattle and is going to take over my house in hollywood with my old roomie george. it makes me happy to know the house will be in good hands. i put a lot of love into this place and i'm still kinda attached to it regardless of all that has happened.

after we finished errands we went to see Abe Vigoda play at the echo. somehow they made the band start before everyone could even get in and we only caught three songs.. but it was mindblowing. they are total kid-punk prog-dance latino-heartbreak poetry in motion (nods to j hopz). i can't wait to catch the full set. we also saw a band called them hills that were very good. must do more research to find out if they are as good as i thought. we stopped for gelatto at the junction on the way home and had some great conversation. we found out that the new teacher's assistant job she's been so excited about is at my son's school. she'll be helping out in his class and that makes me real glad. she's good stuff. i took her to the elliot smith wall on the way home and she was very happy/sad. it's nice to see l.a. thru fresh eyes.

i picture you in the sun

yesterday we got home from tour for a 2 week break. there's been a heat wave in l.a. so it was hotter than a nun's undies. i was ambivalent about coming home at first but realized as soon as i got here that l.a. rules. i've missed my nerdy friends more than i ever knew. the people that i truly consider my friends are the most amazing people god ever made.

george and i went to visit my old pal rene. i forgot my camera so i don't have any pics but just imagine a latino johnny depp with a shit eating grin.. and just as good with kids. we used to run together when shit was jumpin in 94'. rene's a living miracle now and i love him desperately. he's a daily inspiration to me that just because you've done a bad thing don't mean yr a bad egg. i love you buddy. yr new home and yr new life are beautiful... and you are too.

rene took us to a neato cool-kid eastside bbq complete with the token famous guy and skate ramp in the yard. then cali came and picked us up to go to the meeting. sitting in the back of the car listening to cali and rene talk i realized how much they're like.. old married homos. they've been friends for so long and been through so much they practically have their own language. the meeting was rad. took a chip for nine months and felt real proud. afterwards went to see some live music with george at the echo. not only were the bands amazing but i realized that it has been 3 years since i've gone out to just go see some bands i've never heard of...
that is way too long.

i would do that again in a heartbeat.

my friends jesse and shana met up with me in kansas city yesterday and we hit the town.

first to lunch where we admired jesse's new shell silverstein tattoo. nice.

then a quick trim for shana at her friends salon where they serve wine too.. cool.

shana looked like she escaped from the loony bin in her apron.

jesse and i waited patiently for our escapee.

then off to the museum.. we saw this guy on our way and we all smiled because he was so snazzy.

jesse is a good photo subject...

when she wants to be. actually, this one is my fave of the day.

deep in thought over jackson pollack.

life slows down for just a minute.

when we were done the missouri sun felt good on our skin.

and we looked like giants.

my atoms are freaking out and it feels really good

quantum physics, non-static matter, not-seeing is believing, PMA, disappearing and reappearing electrons, the effect of the "observer" on the behavior of atoms, alternate realities, being in two places at once, forgetting everything you know and believing that ANYTHING is possible, the chair is many chairs until you look at it, and then it is only one chair because you expect it to be, willing yr reality to be whatever you want, friends.

there's a tear in my beer

nashville is ok by me. i like the romanticism of the cowboy aesthetic. my grandfather always wore cowboy shirts and bolo ties. he used to sit at the kitchen table afterwork listening to hank williams and johnny cash all night every night. drinking straight whiskey and chain smoking winstons. he couldn't play but he always kept a guitar at the house so when his musician friends came over they could have sing-alongs. a bunch of drunken, sweaty, red-faced men hugging and singing... awesome. it was to me anyway.

the nashville country music museum is pretty rad. seems odd to me that they don't have a bigger hank williams section though. my friend ashley and i did the museum and then met up with ryan, zach, the finger 11 guys and a bunch of the tour bus drivers at a bar.

one of my favotite things about being sober is watching other people get drunk.

one of my least favorite things about being sober is listening to drunk people repeat shit.
afterwards we went to see the black crowes at the grand ole opry. i'm not a black crowes fan... at all. but i'm a grand ole opry fan. so that was cool.

did you know that ray charles used to read braile playboy? me either.

p.s. i'm not the kind of man who gives up just like that.

last few days have been crazy. lots of shows, lots of acoustic radio thingy's. lots of traveling. missing the shit out of gabe. i feel like i'm missing out on so much with him right now. i will make it up to him when i get home in a week. i have no place to live and no car when i get there but... as bukowski says: "i have nowhere to go and no money. hey, i'm back to normal!"

this life is crazy beautiful and i'm blown away by the experiences that fill my days. jah love.
here's a creepy moment that happened at one of the radio stations we were at. no comparison intended. just thought it was fuckin weird.

t.v.o.t.r.

Suddenly, all your history's ablaze
Try to breath as the world desintegrates
Just like autumn leaves we're in for change
Holding tenderly to what remains
And all your memories are as precious as gold
And all the honey and the fire which you stole
Have you running through all your red cheek days
Shaking loose these songs from their sacred hiding space

Hold your heart courageously as we walk into this dark place
Stand, stare fast, erect and see that love is the province of the brave

tiger and the bear

yesterday was a long, slow and hot day off in Charlotte. doug and bear and i made the most of it with some 3 par and a patriots/panthers game. we were truly a sight to behold on the golf course. bear wants to be so good at golf it hurts him. i think dougie's a natural though. he'll probably have a second career as a pro-golfer or tennis player. or maybe lacrosse? i don't know. for some reason that makes complete sense to me. personally, i think golfing is just an excuse for grown men to drink and drive.
